Trailer watch: Is this Sparta or Pompeii?

Not sure if this Sparta or Pompeii.

I've always been interested by the idea of a movie about Mount Vesuvius; the gargantuan mountain whose ash and lava engulfed the city of Pompeii as learned from history's texts. As a school kid, the idea of an entire city being swallowed whole by a mountain was always both terrifying and fascinating. Perhaps the idea of a giant mountain exploding and burning a city alive isn't quite interesting enough and so Hollywood's got to find a way to draw us into a story that happens to take place underneath the mountain.

Enter Paul W.S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9...) and the Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland starring Pompeii. After viewing the trailer, one could be mislead to believe the entire movie is in fact, just be the MacGuffin waiting for the volcano to erupt. The official synopsis reads as follows;

[quote]"Set in 79 A.D., Pompeii tells the story of Milo (Kit Harington), a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save his true love Cassia (Emily Browning), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant who has been unwillingly betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts, Milo must fight his way out of the arena in order to save his beloved as the once magnificent Pompeii crumbles around him."[/quote]

If only the volcano would have erupted sooner. Nonetheless, it's probably worth a go, can't possibly be as bad as the new 300 movie- which literally looks like a straight-to-DVD hash (or cut scenes from a video game strung together).

Pompeii is out February 2014. Just in time for Valentines.
