Film Review: The Scorpion King
A successful movie starring a wrestler. Who would’ve though that’ll ever happen?
Now here we have a prequel depicting a villain from The Mummy Returns as a once hero and all around nice guy. WWF superstar The Rock, whom we all thought his 15 minutes of movie fame had already ended is back as nomadic assassin hired to kill and evil dictator’s sorceress but later finds himself battling the evil dictator himself. It’s basically a concept fresh from 80’s action movies. Hero’s brother dies in the hands of the villain, hero goes to avenge bro’s death, kills villain, saves the day and gets the girl. Is it predictable? Yes. Is it filled with cheese? Yes. Was it enjoyable to watch? Well, yeah. If you’re looking for no brainer action (hey, that’s wrestling) then this will do you good. Learning that this movie is breaking box office records left and right was a surprise to me. Well maybe not entirely. I guess you have to consider the fact that when this movie came out, there was really nothing else to watch. A similar tactic used in The Mummy movies before it. Smart yet kinda cheap. A successful movie starring a wrestler. Who would’ve though that’ll ever happen? Hulk Hogan is ripping his shirt in anger after hearing this. Maybe he’ll fire his agent too.
